Aaron Akman founded Akman Construction in Winnipeg, Manitoba, based on the core values of integrity, collaboration, and commitment. Aaron began his career building homes in the North End of the city. His dedication to craftsmanship and attention to detail continue today, shaping the company’s reputation for delivering quality projects to satisfied clients.

Abram “Lefty” Akman joined his father, Aaron, in 1942 and continued to develop and build residential homes and later apartment buildings in Winnipeg. This includes the four-storey walk-up that now houses the Akman head office at 346 Broadway. Lefty upheld his father’s core values and sustained the company’s success throughout the latter half of the twentieth century.

A Winnipeg Free Press article from 1971 captures the quality and innovation achievements of Lefty Akman. Akman won a prestigious Canadian Housing Design Council award that year, coming in first among 75 applicants nationally for an award that was handed out every two years.

Describing Akman’s development of the Hampton Green Apartments on Wellington Crescent, the article Fond Dream Wins Award explained that, “Although each construction job was equally important to the conscientious Winnipeg builder, Mr. Akman harboured fond dreams that only he himself hoped would someday become a reality.” Lefty was quoted as saying, “It had to be something special,” referring to his vision for the luxury apartments.

After six decades, Akman Construction was building Winnipeg’s landscape, including apartments, commercial buildings, shopping centres, hotels, and more. A Manitoba Business magazine article from the mid-eighties stated, “The Broadway Akmans have come a long way from the cobblestone street dreams of their father and grandfather. They do it all.” The cobblestones allude to the undeveloped state of Broadway Avenue when Aaron first envisioned what Broadway would become.

As the company grows, third-generation Richard Akman steps up to lead the construction business. A Winnipeg Free Press article from 1987 states, “The Akman family has spent the past 75 years building houses, apartments, condominiums and commercial buildings in Winnipeg. The Akmans are marking the milestone by embarking on new projects and entering new markets in Winnipeg and elsewhere.” Read the article.

Fourth-generation family member Jared Akman began working at the company in 1999. He started on the ground floor with his first assignment sweeping the job site as a teenager at the Red River College Princess Street Campus. Jared becomes immersed in the business and is mentored by his father, Richard, along with several long-tenured employees of Akman Construction.

After 20 years of experience in the family business, Jared Akman takes on a leadership role in company operations. One of his first projects in this new position was overseeing the RRC Polytech Skilled Trades and Technology Centre, a 100,000-square-foot college that features new laboratory and workshop spaces, along with classrooms for up to 1,000 students. Delivered through construction management, the project was completed on time and within budget.

Although many things have changed over the past 114 years, Akman Construction has remained true to its founder’s vision and values, now in its fourth generation of family leadership.
